Late Caldwell Jumper Does In Felician

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Caldwell University erased a 20-point deficit, then scored on its final possession to earn a 63-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Felician College on Tuesday night at Job Gymnasium.

Caldwell junior guard Sal Vitello (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) canned a three-point field goal with 3.9 seconds left in regulation to snap a 60-60 tie and provide the winning margin. Vitello finished with six points, three rebounds, and two assists in 19 minutes off of the Cougar bench.

Junior forward Billy McDonald (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) paced Caldwell (4-2, 1-0 CACC) with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Senior forward Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic) topped Felician with 18 points, including a tying jumper with 17.6 seconds to play.

Caldwell matched its largest lead of the game when Vitello split a pair of three throws to put his team head, 59-53, with 3:47 to play. Felician (0-6, 0-2 CACC) scored the next five points, then, after McDonald made 1 of 2 at the foul line, Lamine Cooper (Willingboro, N.J./Medford Tech) drove into the lane and kicked to Miavivululu for a short jumper from the left baseline.

After each team called a timeout, Cougar senior guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) found Vitello alone in the right corner for the game-winner. Felician in-bounded the ball to A.J. Kemp (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) (3 points, 3 assists, 2 steals), who had to force a contested 35-footer which sailed over the rim and out of bounds as time expired.

Felician made 11 of its first 13 shots from the field to open up an 27-11 lead with 10 minutes elapsed in the contest. The Golden Falcons went ahead by 20 points on Cooper's three-pointer, but the Cougars outscored Felician, 9-2, over the final 3:57 of the period to slice its deficit to 38-25 at halftime. Caldwell tallied the first six points of the second half, and later used a 21-4 uprising to turn an 11-point deficit with 17:07 remaining into a 52-46 edge at 6:49.

Felician shot 25 percent from the field, including 1 for 14 from three-point range, in the second half, after converting at a 63-percent clip in the opening 20 minutes. Caldwell outscored the Golden Falcons, 15-3, at the foul line for the game.

Michael Balkovic (Neptune, N.J./St. John Vianney) scored 14 points with nine rebounds and Walker amassed 11 points and five assists for Caldwell. Felician received 13 points from sophomore guard Tim Massado (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth), while senior center Will Thompson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) made 5 of 6 field goal attempts and accumulated 10 points and six rebounds.
