Box Score 2 MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Felician College women's volleyball team began its 2015 season on Saturday afternoon by splitting two non-conference matches at the Marauder Clash, hosted by Millersville University at Pucillo Gymnasium. The Golden Falcons lost, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-18) to the host Marauders before rebounding for a three-set (25-9, 25-14, 25-16) victory over the University of the Sciences.
Freshman outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif.) paced Felician with a solid two-way effort. Calero posted 10 kills and nine digs versus Millersville, then amassed nine kills, 10 digs and two service aces in the victory over the Devils.
Felician snapped a 15-match losing streak and ended a seven-match win streak for USciences, both dating back to last season. The Golden Falcons hit .266 as a team for the match, with senior setter Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla.) notching 29 assists, 10 digs and three blocks.
Freshman middle blocker Carmen Shaw (Garderville, Nev.) hit .350 with 10 kills and two aces for Felician, which totaled nine aces in the match. Sophomore middle Shannon Hood (East Orange, N.J.) hit .455 and had seven kills and three blocks. The Golden Falcons will meet USciences again on Oct. 31 in Philadelphia in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
In its first match of the afternoon, Felician allowed Millersville to rack up 44 kills and a .314 attack percentage. The Golden Falcons never led in the opening set, but Set 2 featured 11 ties and three lead changes. The score was knotted at 22-22 before kills by the Marauders' Erin Harman (Hanover, Pa.) and Kelsi Ceriana (Dillsburg, Pa.) brought the hosts to set point. Millersville committed a service error, but setter Grace Dawson (Collegeville, Pa.) followed with a successful tip to give her team the set.
Felician led Set 3, 14-12, before Harman picked up a kill and three aces in a five-point stretch to give the Marauders the lead for good. The Golden Falcons came as close as 18-16 on a Calero kill, but two Dawson aces gave Millersville some distance for an eventual 25-18 win.
Kayla Wallace (Elverson, Pa.) hit .478 with 13 kills and four blocks for Millersville, while Ceriana finished with 12 kills and a .409 attack percentage. Harman had eight kills and five of her team's 10 aces. Senior Sarah Shebel (Chandler, Ariz.) had 10 digs off the bench for Felician.
