Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) posted the first "triple-double" in the 20-year history of the Felician University men's basketball program during the Golden Falcons' 80-79 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference overtime loss to visiting Bloomfield College on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium.
Reid was one of five double-figure scorers for Felician (6-11, 3-7 CACC), netting 19 points. He recorded career highs of 11 rebounds and 13 assists (one shy of the school record), and added three steals and two blocked shots in 44 minutes of action. Reid needed the extra session to reach the milestone, completing regulation time with eight rebounds.
Junior forward Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J./Medford Tech) tallied a career-high 20 points for Felician. Sophomore forward Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) led Bloomfield, which put all five starters in double figures in scoring, with 20 points and added seven rebounds.
The Bears (7-10, 6-4) forced overtime on a three-point field goal by sophomore Juan Brown (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) with 28 seconds remaining in the second half, knotting the score at 71-71. The lead changed hands three times in extra time. The Golden Falcons went ahead, 77-74, on consecutive Reid baskets, the latter with 2:06 to play.
Brown sank a pair of free throws on Bloomfield's next possession. Bear senior Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Graphic Arts) came up with a blocked shot, then put the visitors ahead for good, 79-77 with a three-point play at the 1:13 mark. After Felician misfired on the offensive end, Reid blocked a lay-up attempt from behind, grabbed his 10th rebound of the game, raced up the floor, and was fouled on a putback.
Reid, however, missed both of his foul shots, and Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J./The Robinson School) was fouled while rebounding the second shot. Kelly kept Felician's hopes a live by only making 1 of 2 shots, and Reid chose to take the quick lay-up for an 80-79 deficit. With just over seven ticks on the clock, the Golden Falcons fouled Davidson, who missed both tries. But a 22-foot jump shot by Golden Falcon sophomore Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic) had 13 points and six rebounds for Felician. Kozul scored 14 points and Tim Massado (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) 11 off the Golden Falcon bench. Blue finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for Bloomfield.
Felician opened the game with a 17-6 run over the first seven-plus minutes, and was ahead, 40-33, at halftime. The Bears erased second-half deficits of nine and six points, and led, 64-60, with 6:34 left in regulation. Kozul and Reid canned consecutive three-pointers late in regulation to give the Golden Falcons an 71-68 edge before Brown's shot from the top of the arc caused overtime. Chukwuocha was unable to convert a contested lay-up in the closing seconds of regulation.
Due to the anticipated effects of Winter Storm Jonas, Felician's game at Holy Family University scheduled for Saturday afternoon has been moved up a day and will be played on Friday at 6 p.m. at the HFU Campus Center Gymnasium in Philadelphia. The women's teams from Felician and Holy Family will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday.
