Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University senior goalkeeper Bjonda Ademi (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made two difficult saves in the final seven minutes to preserve her team's 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Post University on Tuesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
With the victory, Felician (5-7-2, 3-5-2 CACC) remains alive in the chase for a CACC playoff berth. The top eight schools in the 13-team league at season's end will qualify for the conference tournament. Felician, with two CACC games remaining, has 11 points, trailing eighth-place Dominican (N.Y.) College (15) and ninth-place Post (13).
Ademi, the reigning CACC Defensive Player of the Week, had not made a second-half save until fewer than seven minutes remained in regulation time. She came off her line to deny Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn/St. Joseph) a chance at the equalizer, then made a one-handed stop of an Angela Ciaramella (Hamden, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) offering 70 seconds later. The Golden Falcons successfully defended the ensuing corner kick as well.
The Eagles made two more runs in the final three minutes, but were whistled for offside on each occasion. Ademi finished the day with four saves.
Felician took a 2-0 lead into halftime. In the 12th minute, junior Danielle Stoll (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) sent a cross from the left side parallel to the goal line. Classmate Amanda Nowak (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) was able to shield a Post defender, allowing the ball to travel almost to the far post, where Sami Lederle (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) knocked it in for her third goal of the season.
The Golden Falcons benefited from a Post own goal in the 19th minute. A long throw-in by Carly Brantner (Shrewsbury, N.J./Eastern Christian) bounded into the six-yard box. A player from each team attempted to head the ball on a bounce, with the Eagle defender sending it backward on the ground and eventually over the goal line.
Yanez cut the visitors' deficit in half with her sixth goal of the season coming with 35:57 left to play. Afterward, Eagle keeper Cailah Baranowski (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) stopped two Felician players on 1 v. 1 opportunities, setting Post up for its late-game push.
Felician finished with a 13-10 shot advantage, with Stoll leading all players with four attempts. Baranowski was credited with six saves.
Felician concludes the regular season with conference road games against 11th-place Chestnut Hill College on Saturday and Dominican on Oct. 26.
