Box Score BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Despite receiving the fourth "double-double" of the season from sophomore outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif.), Felician University was defeated, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19) by host Concordia (N.Y.) College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Meyer Athletic Center.
The victory allowed Concordia (2-15, 2-12 CACC) to earn a sweep of its two-match season-series with the Golden Falcons.
Calero led all players on the night with 14 kills. She added 10 digs and three blocks. Felician junior outside Lanyse Castro (Elizabeth, N.J.) put up a match-high 11 digs.
The Clippers got off to a fast start, scoring the match's first eight points and moving out on top, 12-1 in Set 1. Nearly half of Concordia's points in the set came on Felician errors (10 attack, two service).
The Golden Falcons recovered from an 18-12 second-set deficit to tie the set at 22-22. But Concordia used a side-out on a kill by Lauren Peters (Monterey Park, Calif.) to move back ahead. Following a Felician attack error, Clipper sophomore Bianca Ortiz (Ponce, Puerto Rico) came up with an ace to end the set and put the hosts up, 2-0, in the match.
Concordia carried the momentum into Set 3, which they led, 7-1 and 13-3. Felician tried to climb back into contention, pulling within 23-16, then saving three match points, before the Clippers closed out the victory.
Junior Michelle Klimas (Thornwood, N.Y.) and sophomore Michaela Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) topped Concordia with eight kills apiece. Ortiz amassed 27 assists and four aces from her setter position.
Sophomore opposite hitter Carmen Shaw (Gardnerville, Nev.) had six kills for Felician (0-24, 0-14). Golden Falcon setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif.) had 21 assists and four digs in two sets.
Felician is back at home to entertain Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
