Women's Volleyball Falls To Lightning In Three Tight Sets

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's volleyball team held off Felician University in three tightly-contested sets to earn a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the host Golden Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

Sophomore outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) put down a team-high 10 kills and added seven digs for Felician (0-25, 0-15 CACC).

The Golden Falcons recovered from a 7-2 first-set deficit to take a 14-12 lead. The set was even at 16-16 when Goldey-Beacom pulled away by capturing six of the next seven rallies, including consecutive service aces by Megann Santiago (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue). The Lightning hit .571 for the set.

Similarly, a 7-1 run by GBC turned a one-point Set 2 deficit into a 12-7 lead. The visitors extended their edge to 20-13, only to see the Golden Falcons pull to within 22-20. An unassisted kill by Grace McCarthy (Middletown, Del./Delaware Military Academy) righted the ship for the Lightning, who then used a Felician attack error, and two points later, a kill by Jada Canteen (Newark, Del./Glasgow) to assume a two-sets-to-none lead.

Set 3 featured 11 ties and four lead changes. Felician's largest advantage came at 13-10 and their latest edge was at the 17-16 mark. Kills by Carmen Shaw (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) and Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murrieta Mesa) erased a late two-point Golden Falcon deficit and evened the set at 21-21, but GBC won the next two rallies. An Amanda Coccia (Rahway, N.J./Roselle Catholic) kill made it a one-point set before a pair of kills from Lightning freshman Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) ended the match 65 minutes after the first service.

The Lightning (10-12, 5-10 CACC) came up with 10 aces, helping it offset 15 service errors. Przywara hit .455 with 17 kills, eight digs and three aces, and McCarthy totaled 14 kills and 11 digs. GBC sophomore setter Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) racked up 33 assists and six digs.

Shaw hit .583 with eight kills for Felician. Greek totaled three kills and 20 assists, and junior Lanyse Castro (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) had four kills and 11 digs.

Felician is back at home to take on Nyack College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Rutherford.
