ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. – Enjoying the shortest road trip in the three-year history of its program, the Felician University women's bowling team placed 17th out of 27 schools at the Fairleigh Dickinson University New Jersey Jamboree, held Friday through Sunday at Parkway Lanes. Felician posted a 6-7 dual-match record during the event, including 5-3 on the final two days.
The Golden Falcons (7-11 on season) improved from their 23rd-place result out of 26 teams in the same event last year, when it was held at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick. Parkway Lanes is located just six miles from Felician's Rutherford campus.
The individual standings were culled from the five traditional team matches contested on Saturday. Junior right-hander Jessica Zalewski (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) was the only Golden Falcon to start all five games, and she finished 43rd in a field of 189 by felling 878 pins (175.6 average). Zalewski was also the "anchor" bowler for the majority of Felician's Baker games over the weekend.
Junior Heather Androvich (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) shot 606 over four starts on Saturday to average 151.5 and finish 96th.
The tournament began with five five-game Baker matches on Friday. Felician started its day with a 912-895 victory over Duquesne University, with freshman Nicole Aumack (Brick, N.J/Brick Township) making her collegiate debut in the No. 2 spot in the line-up. However, despite averaging 178.8 for the day, the Golden Falcons could not muster another dual victory. Nevertheles, their total pinfall left them in 10th place.
Saturday went the opposite way for Felician. The Golden Falcons' saw their scores drop, but they went 3-2 in dual competition. Highlighting the day was a 758-745 victory over No. 8 nationally-ranked North Carolina A&T University in Match 4. With the team standings ranked by total pins, and Felician averaging 159.7 on Saturday, it dropped to 18th place.
A sixth five-game Baker match kicked off Sunday, with Felician falling to Caldwell University by 40 pins. The tournament then concluded with a pair of position-round Baker best-of-seven playoff matches, and the Golden Falcons claimed a pair of seven-game triumphs, defeating Caldwell and Bethune-Cookman University, for its final 17th-place result.
Host Fairleigh Dickinson went 11-0 qualifying dual matches, but lost its first playoff match, 4-1, to Sacred Heart University and settled for third place. LIU Brooklyn then defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, for the tournament title. Haley Carroll of St. Francis (Pa.) College was the individual champion, rolling 1,067 on Saturday to edge FDU's Morgan Brown by one pin.
Felician is in action again on Nov. 4-6 at the Virginia Union University Invitational in Midlothian, Va.
