Calero Reaches Milestone, But Volleyball Comes Up Short Of Nyack

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Nyack College emerged from 22-22 ties to win the final two sets and earn a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's volleyball victory over host Felician University on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. The victory allowed Nyack (10-17, 7-9 CACC) to claim both ends of its 2016 season series from Felician.

Sophomore outside hitter Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) led the Golden Falcons with 12 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. In the process she ran her career kill total to 508, becoming the sixth player in the 12-year history of the Felician program to surpass 500.

The hosts received a season-high eight kills from freshman setter Charlotte Greek (Menifee, Calif./Murietta Mesa). Greek, who also totaled 21 assists and eight digs, posted a .438 attack percentage for the night.

The Warriors never trailed in their first-set victory. They hit .419 for set while jumping out to leads of 4-0 and 9-3. A kill by Carmen Shaw (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) and a Calero service ace got Felician as close as 20-16, and Greek's ace produced the same margin at 23-19, but a pair of Golden Falcon errors handed the set to Nyack.

Set 2 played out much differently, featuring 13 ties and five lead changes, with the teams never separated by more than three points. Felician owned its last lead at 22-12 on an ace by Lanyse Castro (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth), but the visitors captured the next three rallies, taking the lead for good on a Kelsi Collins (Tarpon Springs, Fla./Tarpon Springs) ace. A Nyack attack error kept Felician alive, but the Golden Falcons committed a net violation to put the Warriors up, two sets to none.

Leading 15-14 in Set 3, Felician succumbed in the next four rallies to fall behind, 18-15. The Golden Falcons came back for a 19-19 draw, and used a pair of Warrior errors to pull even again at 22-22. But Nyack recorded kills on the next three points and took the match.

Junior Lindsay Miller (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) came up with eight kills and three blocks to pace Nyack. Collins posted 24 digs and three aces from her libero position.

Freshman middle blocker Kaleysa Vodrazka (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) came off the bench to put down five kills and three blocks for Felician (0-26, 0-16).
