Men's Basketball Can't Quite Topple First-Place Bloomfield

Box Score

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Bloomfield College men's basketball team embarked on key scoring runs at the end of each half to help hold off visiting Felician University and earn an 81-74 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Golden Falcons on Tuesday night at BC Gymnasium.

Bloomfield (14-6, 9-2 CACC) is the first-place team in the CACC North Division and is ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll. Bear junior guard Marcus Fleming (Linden, N.J.) shot 9 for 13 from the floor and produced game highs of 24 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists on Tuesday.

Felician (7-13, 4-8) received 23 points and nine rebounds from sophomore forward Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.). Senior center Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J.) turned in season-high 18 points and six rebounds for the Golden Falcons. Both teams saw four players score in double figures.

Felician had matched its largest lead of the game, 32-21, on a pair of Chukwuocha free throws with five minutes, 18 seconds, to play in the first half. During the ensuing Bloomfield possession, Spaulding, the Golden Falcons' top scorer and rebounder on the year, picked up his third personal foul.

With Spaulding relegated to the bench, the Bears closed the first half with a 16-2 run. Bloomfield took the lead for good on a Fleming lay-up with 0:38 left in the period, and his buzzer-beating jumper allowed the hosts to enter intermission ahead, 37-34.

Bloomfield's advantage grew to nine points with 11:51 to play, and reached a high of 11, 65-54, following a three-point field goal by Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J.) at the 10:04 mark. Felician countered with a 10-3 spurt over the next 3 ½ minutes, and closed to within 69-67 after a conventional three-point play from Tony Houston (Jacksonville, Fla.) at 4:19.

Trailing 71-69, the Golden Falcons came up empty on a pair of go-ahead three-point attempts. Bloomfield then scored nine of the next 10 points, including six by Fleming, to lead by 10 with 0:51 to play and secure its second victory over the Golden Falcons this season.

Davidson finished with 15 points and Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J.) and Dontay Julius (Linden, N.J.) netted 12 apiece for Bloomfield. Houston tallied a season-high 10 points and freshman Debon Bright (Woodland Park, N.J.) also scored 10 for Felician.
