Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University women's soccer team scored in the initial and final minutes of the second period to secure a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Felician University on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Holy Family (11-4, 8-1 CACC) sits in second place in the CACC. The Tigers are third in the 13-team conference in scoring offense.
Felician (4-8-1, 3-6) dented the scoreboard just two minutes, two seconds, into the contest. A Katina Kozlowski (Milton, N.Y.) shot was blocked by the HFU defense. But Golden Falcon junior midfielder Sami Lederle (Brick, N.Y.) was the first player to the rebound and pushed the ball into the net. Kozlowski was awarded an assist on the play.
Junior midfielder Brianna Rock (Bensalem, Pa.), the CACC's leader in points and shots, drew the Tigers even in the 25th minute, collecting a pass from teammate Cailey Plath (Philadelphia, Pa.) and finishing. Both teams were dangerous at various stages of an evenly played first half, but the defenses and goalkeepers were up to the task, and the 1-1 score held for intermission.
It took only 40 seconds of period two for the hosts to take the lead for good. Stefanie Ulmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) served a ball over the middle into the 18-yard box and found teammate Shannon Metzler (Erial, N.J.). Metzler shot from the middle of the box found the back of the net.
The Tigers out-shot Felician, 16-2, for the second period. Ulmer hit the crossbar with a 59th minute shot, and Felician freshman goalkeeper Jamie Kazenmayer (Forked River, N.J.) made six saves in the period to keep the Golden Falcons within striking distance. HFU, however, successfully defended six second-half Felician corner kicks and eight for the game.
A through-ball by Alexa Teschko (Clayton, N.J.) freed Rock on a breakaway as the game clock wound down. With 36 seconds remaining, Rock scored her 12th goal of the year to deflate the Golden Falcons.
Holy Family's 23-8 shot advantage negated Felician's 8-4 edge in corners. Rock got off 11 shots, including seven on goal, to up her league-leading total to 72. Kazenmayer finished with nine saves, while freshman Emily Camp (Pittsgrove, Pa.) stopped four shots for the Tigers.
Despite the loss, other conference results allowed Felician remain in eighth place in the CACC. The top eight teams at season's end will qualify for the conference playoffs. The Golden Falcons have three games remaining, including a now-pivotal trip to seventh-place Post University on Wednesday.
