Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University sliced a 21-point second-half deficit to four before losing to visiting Bloomsburg University, 87-80, in non-conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium.
Bloomsburg senior swingman Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) led all players with 31 points and added eight rebounds. Felician received 21 points and 14 rebounds from junior swingman Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J./Eastside), while senior guard Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del./Howard) tallied 18 of his 21 points after halftime.
Felician (3-4) started the contest slowly. The Huskies led, 14-4, after four-plus minutes of action, and built a 34-14 edge with 5:52 left in the first half. The Golden Falcons cut their deficit to eight points at the 1:33 point of the half, but Bloomsburg freshman Myles Bunyon (Collegeville, Pa./Valley Forge Military Academy) made a three-point field goal as the clock wound down, and the visitors carried a 44-33 edge into the intermission.
Still ahead by 12 with 10:40 remaining, the Huskies received a four-point play from Mortellite to start an 11-2 run. A transition lay-up by Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) gave Bloomsburg its largest spread of the night, 74-53, at the 7:02 mark.
Felician scored the next eight points to remain in contention. Consecutive lay-ups by Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Chelsea CTE) brought the Golden Falcons to within 10, and a Stanford three-pointer made it 75-68 at 4:09.
With the Huskies in front by eight, Williams was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and made both free throws. The Golden Falcons forced a turnover, and Stanford excited the home crowd by canning a jump shot for a 79-75 deficit and 1:34 to play. But Bloomsburg ran the shot clock down before Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) found Rose for a key lay-up at 1:05.
Stanford scored on a second-chance lay-up to restore the four-point deficit, but only 0:37 remained. The Huskies went 6 for 6 at the foul line in the final 28 seconds to secure the victory.
Rose finished with 16 points for the Huskies. Felician sophomore Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University HS) scored 16 points, and Williams amassed eight points and nine rebounds. Bloomsburg shot 50.8 percent from the floor, and held the Golden Falcons to 37.0-percent shooting.
Felician begins its 2017-18 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a short trip to Caldwell University on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
