Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Sophomore forward Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Eastside) recorded 25 points and 15 rebounds, including a key offensive board and pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining, to lift Felician University to an 80-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.
Felician, playing its last home game of the 2016-17 campaign, celebrated Senior Day. Seniors Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J./Medford Tech), Tim Massado (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth), Damiun Moore (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) and Bryant Webb (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The results affected the playoff races in both CACC divisions. Felician remained in contention for the fourth and final berth from the CACC North, sitting ½ game behind fifth-place Concordia (N.Y.) College and 1 ½ back of fourth-place Caldwell University with two to play. Holy Family, meanwhile, slipped a game short of fourth-place University of the Sciences in the CACC South.
Spaulding led four double-figure scorers from Felician (10-15, 7-10 CACC). Junior guard Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del./Howard) netted 13 points and four assists. Freshman guard Randy Bell (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) picked up 24 points and six rebounds for the Tigers.
The lead changed hands on nine occasions, with a jump shot by Webb giving Felician the lead for good, 66-65, with four minutes, 30 seconds, to play in regulation time. Felician led, 74-70, at the 1:39 mark before a three-point field goal by Dyllon Hudson-Emory (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) sliced HFU's deficit to one.
Webb and Bell traded baskets, bringing the game clock below one minute. Felician ran the shot clock down, and misfired on a jumper close to the buzzer. But Spaulding corralled the rebound, was fouled, and sank both free throws to restore a three-point edge.
As time wound down, Holy Family put the ball into the hands of Bell, the CACC's leading scorer. He temporarily lost control, recovered, rose for a tying three-pointer, and was fouled with 0:02.2 to play. Bell made the first two attempts from the foul line, but the third rimmed out. Felician junior Jamar Redmond (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) rebounded and dribbled into the right corner, and by the time the Tigers could foul him, only two-tenths of a second were left.
Webb finished with 11 points and Chukwuocha tallied 10 for the Golden Falcons. HFU (10-16, 8-9) received 16 points off the bench from freshman Ryan Corcoran (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford), while Hudson-Emory scored 14.
The first half was a streaky affair which saw Felician get out to a 20-13 lead. The Tigers embarked upon a 13-0 run to move ahead by six, only to see the Golden Falcons answer with a 16-2 spurt for their largest lead of the day, 36-28, with 3:09 left in the half. A buzzer-beating tip-in by Spaulding sent the hosts into the locker room ahead, 40-36. The teams were never separated by more than six points in the second period.
Felician travels to Caldwell University on Wednesday.
