Bloomsburg Men's Basketball Edges Felician, 84-83, In Rutherford

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team scored 10 of the game's final 11 points to grab an 84-83 non-conference victory from host Felician University on Saturday evening at Job Gymnasium. Felician (2-2) was playing its 2019-20 home opening contest.

Senior Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J./University HS) (four assists) and sophomore Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J./Newark Central) (five rebounds) scored 14 points each to lead the Golden Falcons. Bloomsburg senior forward Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) went 9 for 13 from the field and totaled 20 points and eight rebounds.

The winning margin for the Huskies came when senior guard Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) converted a pair of free throws with 58 seconds remaining in regulation time. Felician missed on two shots to re-take the lead during the game's final minute, including a contested 15-foot jumper by Wright that rimmed out with two seconds to play.

Bloomsburg (1-2) discarded double-digit deficits during both periods. Felician senior swingman Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) converted a four-point play, then followed up with a steal and assist as Nas Amos' (Newark, N.J./East Side) transition layup gave the hosts a 23-11 lead with eight minutes gone by. The spread grew as high as 37-24 on a three-point field goal by freshman Josiah Basket (Oak Ridge, N.J./West Milford) with 7:22 to go until halftime.

The Huskies, however, closed the half with an 18-6 spurt. A layup by Mauras at the 0:40 mark brought the visitors to within 43-42 at the break.

With his team still ahead by two and 17:07 remaining, Felician senior Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) scored six consecutive points to jumpstart a 20-7 spurt. Out of a timeout, Wright nailed a three to give the Golden Falcons their largest edge of the night, 71-56, at the 10:55 mark.

The hosts still led, 80-71, on a Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) bucket with 3:54 left. But Felician would not record another field goal. Down by eight, Bloomsburg saw Wagner score on three straight possessions to trail just 82-80 at 2:02, and on the ensuing Felician possession, Justin Anderson's (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) midcourt steal and lay-in knotted the score. Felician briefly went back on top when Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth) split a pair of free throws at 1:18, but Mauras did him one better at the other end.

Mauras totaled 19 points eight rebounds and six assists and Anderson (8-12 FG) finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. For Felician, Shimou and Lewis each netted 12 points, while Jackson amassed six points, 11 rebounds and three steals.

The game was delayed two hours from its scheduled 3 p.m. start time due to transportation issues.

Felician travels to East Stroudsburg University for a 7 p.m. non-league tilt on Monday.
