Men's Basketball Falls At Bloomfield Despite Better Marksmanship

Box Score

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Felician University shot 52 percent from the floor, including 63 percent in the first half, but suffered a 75-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball loss to host Bloomfield College on Wednesday night at the Bloomfield College Gymnasium.

Felician's starting forward tandem of senior Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J.) and sophomore Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J.) scored 13 points apiece. Jackson also grabbed nine rebounds.

The Golden Falcons held Bloomfield (7-8, 4-4 CACC) to 44 percent shooting on the night. But, hampered by 18 turnovers and only nine offensive rebounds, Felician attempted 11 fewer field goals than its hosts. The Golden Falcons were also just 5 of 20 (25 percent) on three-point shots.

Senior guard Safee Abdus-Safur (Newark, N.J.) recorded 21 points and seven rebounds and junior forward Rich Chapman (Newark, N.J.) added 20 points and six boards for the Bears.

A layup by sophomore Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J.) capped a 22-5 run for Felician and gave the visitors their largest lead of the night, 30-18, with five minutes, 50 seconds, remaining in the first period. But Bloomfield halved the deficit with the next six points, and by intermission, trailed only 36-34.

The Bears moved ahead to stay when Chapman snapped a 40-40 tie by nailing a three-pointer with 16:43 to play. Exactly halfway through the second period, Bloomfield extended to a 10-point spread following two Tariq McKenith (Newark, N.J.) free throws. Felician came within 71-67 on a Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J.) three at the 3:48 mark, but missed on several chances to move closer before Chapman's layup at 1:49 helped the Bears hold on.

McRae was 6 for 6 from the floor and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J.) also turned in 12 points for Felician (4-9, 2-3), which has lost four consecutive games. McKenith helped the Bears end a three-game slide with 11 points.

Each team committed only 10 personal fouls and the sides combined to shoot just 16 free throws.

Felician is home on Saturday for the first time in January, entertaining Chestnut Hill College at 3:30 p.m. in Rutherford.
