Men's Basketball Heats Up Job Gym For Senior Night Win

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University men's basketball team set a program record by shooting 63.3 percent from the floor, and tied another with 17 three-point field goals, during its 104-91 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Caldwell University on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician gained a split of its two-game CACC season series with the Cougars.

The result eliminated Caldwell (12-14, 8-10 CACC) from playoff contention but left three teams, including the Golden Falcons, fighting for the final two berths from the CACC North Division into next week's league championship tournament. Felician (12-14, 10-8) is tied with Bloomfield College for third place, with Nyack College one game off the pace.

A victory over Georgian Court University in Saturday's regular season finale in Lakewood would vault the Golden Falcons into their third consecutive conference tournament. Felician is still alive for the division's No. 3 seed, which it would secure with a win and a Bloomfield loss to Caldwell. But the Golden Falcons could also see their season end on Saturday should they lose to the Lions.

Felician was playing its final home game of 2019-10 on Wednesday. The Golden Falcons celebrated Senior Night, with Felician President Dr. Anne M. Prisco joining the coaching staff in honoring six seniors – Chris Garcia (Howard Beach, N.Y./Forest Hills), Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek), Jared Pearson (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge), Marlon Reid (Englewood, N.J./Lovejoy [Ga.]), Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and team manager Christina Carrington – in a pregame ceremony.

Once the game began, Lewis was one of several Golden Falcons with the hot hand. He was 9 for 12 from the field, including 7 of 10 from three-point range, and totaled 25 points and 12 rebounds. Lewis, who logged 31 minutes, added three assists, two blocked shots and one steal to his line.

All five Golden Falcon starters scored in double figures as Felician produced its highest offensive output of the season. Shimou went 5 for 8 from distance and scored 18 points. Sophomore forward Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J./Newark Central) was 7 for 8 from the floor, finishing with 17 points and five assists.

Felician never trailed on the night. The Golden Falcons saw a nine-point first half lead sliced to two on a Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) second-chance jump shot with four minutes, 19 seconds, to play in the opening period. But Lewis scored eight points during a 14-4 Felician run to close the half and the hosts went into the locker room ahead, 48-36.

The Golden Falcons began period two by making 11 of their first 12 field-goal attempts. With 12:05 to play, the hosts were on top, 76-55, following a Shimou three. Caldwell embarked on a 19-5 run, pulling to within a seven-point deficit on consecutive threes by Marcellus Ross (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Joseph) and Gabe Johnson (Bloomfield, N.J./Union City), the latter at the 7:52 mark. The Cougars then forced a shot clock violation.

But Caldwell misfired on an attempt to draw closer, and Felician sophomore Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) drained consecutive threes to restore an 87-74 edge at 6:09. Never again did the Cougars come within single digits of their hosts.

Felician handed out 33 assists on its 38 field goals. Colon scored 13 points and matched a career high with 12 assists, his second collegiate double-double. The Golden Falcons received 12 points and seven rebounds from sophomore forward Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J./St. Mary-Elizabeth).

Felician is 6-1 in February.

Saturday's tip off time is set for 2 p.m.
