Colon Leads Golden Falcon Men Past Holy Family, 83-66

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore guard Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J.) scored a career-best 23 points to lead Felician University to an 83-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Felician (8-13, 6-7 CACC) ended a stretch of alternating losses and wins for its previous six games. The Golden Falcons have won consecutive contests for the first time since Nov. 9 and 13.

Felician remained in fifth place in the CACC North Division. Caldwell University and Bloomfield College are in a tie for third place, both 1 ½ games ahead of the Golden Falcons for the final conference playoff spots from the division. Felician, which has six games left, hosts Bloomfield (12-11, 8-6) on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Sophomore forward Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa.) paced Holy Family (7-16, 4-10) with 22 points, six rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots. Tiger freshman guard Devon Moore (Ocean City, N.J.) also netted 22 points.

The Golden Falcons led, 38-28, at halftime on the strength of eight first-period three-point field goals. A longball by freshman Josiah Basket (Oak Ridge, N.J.) with 10:01 left in the half broke a 16-16 tie and gave Felician the lead for good. The visitors went ahead by four after a three-pointer from senior Jeff Lewis (Sicklerville, N.J.) at the 7:53 mark, and stretched to a 28-20 edge following Colon's three at 6:24. The Golden Falcons were up by as many as 12 points during the first stanza.

With 13:58 left in regulation time, a trifecta by Moore allowed HFU to remain within striking distance, trailing 46-39. Layups by Felician senior Jared Pearson (Woodbrige, N.J.) sandwiched one from classmate Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, N.J.) and extended the spread to 13. That series touched off a game-deciding 18-4 run for the visitors.

Holy Family sliced a 21-point gap to 67-55 at 4:05. Colon settled the Golden Falcons by scoring on his team's next two trips, and a Pearson dunk at 1:13 provided the exclamation point, 79-61.

Colon played 27 minutes, shooting 6 for 7 from the field. He made all four of his shots from distance, also a career high, and was 7 for 9 at the foul line. He added three rebounds and three assists. Shimou amassed 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals and Basket added 13 points and a season-high four assists.

Felician owned a 39-33 rebounding edge, led by a seven-point, 10-rebound, four assist effort from sophomore Jay'von Jackson (Plainfield, N.J.). Senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y.) totaled 12 points and 10 boards for the Tigers.

The Golden Falcons defeated Holy Family for the fourth consecutive year.
