Lewis Sets Felician Men's Basketball Record For Coaching Wins

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University men's basketball team completed the non-conference portion of its 2021-22 schedule with a 90-71 victory over visiting Saint Michael's College on Monday evening at Job Gymnasium. The teams were meeting for the first time in nearly 15 years, and for the first time ever with Felician as the host.

With the win, Golden Falcon head coach Ivan Lewis became Felician's all-time leader in men's basketball coaching victories. Monday was Lewis' 70th career triumph – all at Felician – moving him one ahead of the number Dave DeFerrari amassed with the Golden Falcons from 2009-15.

Felician men's basketball is playing in its 26th season, and Lewis, a 2004 Felician graduate, has been involved with 16 of them. After playing two seasons for Darryl Jacobs with the Golden Falcons, he returned to his alma mater in 2008-09 as a member of Del Harrison's staff. He spent the next six seasons as DeFerrari's lead assistant before taking over the head job in 2015-16.

"I would like to thank Del Harrison, Dave DeFerrari, and my coach, Darryl Jacobs, for setting the bar and providing me the opportunity to grow at Felician," Lewis said. "I am grateful to the coaches and players who have put a great deal of work into these 70 wins, as well as the Felician community for their support throughout."

On Monday, junior swingman Justin Davis (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken) led the Golden Falcons (6-4) with 26 points and eight rebounds. Freshman swingman Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland/Colaiste Choilm) totaled a season-best 17 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes, and sophomore guard Nas Amos (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) collected 13 points, seven rebounds, a career-high nine assists and three steals.

The Golden Falcons, who never trailed, shot a season-best 56.3 percent from the floor, led by McCarthy's 8 for 12 clip. Felician committed just nine personal fouls and allowed the Purple Knights to attempt only four free throws.

Boosted by 15 McCarthy points, the hosts led by as many as 14 in the first half and 38-26 at halftime. Period two belonged to Davis, who recorded 22 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes as the Golden Falcons pulled away. Felician's largest spread came at 75-49 following a three-point field goal by Jamling Lama (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) with 8:15 remaining.

Junior forward Kasai Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Millbrook School) led four double-figure scorers for Saint Michael's (4-6) with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Felician is idle until Dec. 30, when it returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play by hosting Caldwell University at 6 p.m.
