ALTOONA, Pa. – The Felician University women's bowling team went 9-3 in its dual matches and finished fifth out of 13 teams at the 2022 Red Flash Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis (Pa.) University from Friday through Sunday at Holiday Bowl Altoona.
Felician was competing for the first time since November 14, 2021, and for the initial occasion guided by interim head coach Nicole Aumack. During Friday's traditional-format play, the Golden Falcons handed Aumack her first career victory following the day's second match, a 918-671 triumph over the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg. Senior right-hander Natalie Swindell (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) rolled a 230 game to key the win.
The tournament format called for five traditional team games on Friday followed by five 5-game Baker matches on Saturday. The teams were then seeded into a playoff bracket for three best-of-7 Baker matches on Sunday. Felician improved in the standings each day, sitting in ninth place after Day 1 and improving to sixth after Day 2. The Golden Falcons then earned a pair of seven-game victories during Sunday's bracket play, concluding the event with a win over D'Youville College to capture fifth place.
After turning in a 2-2 (plus a bye) dual record on Friday, Felician was 5-0 during Saturday's Baker play. With senior Jenn Ingulli (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) in the "setup" role (4th and 9th frames) and Swindell in the "anchor" spot (5th and 10th) for all five matches, the Golden Falcons averaged 170.2 for their 25 Baker games on the day. They completed their afternoon with a 853-831 win over No. 16 nationally-ranked Morgan State University.
The next morning, Felician extended its win streak to seven by eking out a seven-game playoff win over Wagner College. Wilmington (Del.) University ended the Golden Falcons' winning stretch, but in the fifth-place match, Felician recovered from a 3-2 deficit to top D'Youville.
The individual standings were determined from Friday's traditional play. Seventy-three players started at least one match. Swindell was Felician's top performer, finishing 17th with a five-game total of 886 (177.2 average). Freshman Sandra Hornor (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) (30th, 835), sophomore Aniesa Grabowski (Childs, Pa./Lakeland) (31st, 834) and Ingulli (37th, 810) also started all five matches for the Golden Falcons.
Morgan State won the tournament, claiming a 4-1 victory over the host Red Flash in the championship match. Saint Francis had the best dual-match record for the weekend of 10-2, while Morgan State and Walsh University joined Felician with 9-3 marks.
Felician (28-31) was in action for the first of five consecutive weekends. The Golden Falcons next compete at the Griffin Baker Classic, hosted by Chestnut Hill College on Feb. 5-6 in New Castle, Del.
