Box Score SPARKHILL, NY – Felician Men's Basketball Jaylen Colon (Paterson, NJ) started off the season with a career milestone of achieving his 1,000th point during a 78-71 win against Mercy College at the STAC Tip-Off Challenge Saturday Night.
The red-shirt senior entered the weekend needing 16-points to reach 1,000, but after a pair of back-to-back free-throws, Colon surpassed that goal with 19, leading all Golden Falcon players.
Felician jumped out in front quick leading 12-7, but Mercy was able to flip the lead on a jumper from behind the arc. The Golden Falcons eventually equalized the score at 28 when Etnik Peci (Pristina, Kosovo) bucketed a jumper and soon after, Peci recorded a three to put Felician up by 2, going into halftime, 34-32.
Kicking off the second half, Ebuka Nnagbo (Niagara Falls, NY) ignited the Felician offense with a made layup. The Golden Falcons would hold its largest lead of the night (11) when Colon recorded an easy bucket, and Peci and Anas Amos (Newark, NJ) each netted a pair of free-throws, 60-49. The double-digit lead was short lived as the Mavericks were able to only trail by 4 with a little over 4-minutes left to play in the night.
As time began to wind down into its final seconds, Mercy had no choice but to foul to stop the clock, sending Colon to the line. At 11-seconds, Colon recorded his 1,000th point on his first attempt; he then went on to record 3 more freebees to help propel the Golden Falcons over the Mavericks, 78-71.
Jonathan Edwards (Waterbury, CT) finished the night with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists and Peci was able to record 11 points and 3 steals. Coming off the bench, Angelo Santiago (Peekskill, NY) controlled the boards with 8 rebounds.
The Men's Basketball team continues the STAC Tip-Off tomorrow for a 1pm game against tournament hosts, Saint Thomas Aquinas.
