Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Redshirt junior swingman Justin Davis (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken) set a Felician University men's basketball single-game record with 46 points as the Golden Falcons defeated visiting Caldwell University, 98-61, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Monday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician, which topped Caldwell for the second time in six days, swept its season series from the Cougars for the first time in 11 years.
Felician (16-8, 11-5 CACC) kept pace with Dominican (N.Y.) College, a winner later Monday, for in the race for second place in the CACC North Division and the first-round home playoff game that comes with it. The Golden Falcons would need a win versus Post University on Saturday and a Dominican loss to claim the No. 2 seed. The conference championship tournament begins on Mar. 1.
The Felician men's record of 39 points was shared by Golden Falcon Hall-of-Famers Devon Young (Mar. 5, 2010), and Antoine Obery (Feb. 2, 2013). Davis surpassed that figure on a transition layup with 9 ½ minutes remaining in Monday's contest. He scored 20 points in the first period, and when he exited the game for the final time with just under four minutes remaining, had set school records of 18 field goals in 30 attempts.
Davis, who played 34 minutes, was 6 for 10 from three-point range and 4 of 5 at the foul line. He also grabbed nine rebounds. His scoring total is the top figure in the NCAA Division II East Region this season and tied for seventh nationally. Felician sophomore guard Nas Amos (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, and junior guard Jaylen Colon (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) added 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Felician, which never trailed, jumped out on top, 25-9, after 9 ½ minutes of action. The hosts lead by as many as 16 points during the first period before settling for a 47-36 halftime advantage.
The Golden Falcons began the second half with turnovers on their first three possessions, but did little wrong afterward. Ahead 52-40 with 17:15 remaining, Felician put the game away by tallying the next 14 points, the last 10 by Davis. The spurt was part of a larger 25-5 run that culminated with Davis' record-setting layup and left Felician in front by 32. The lead grew as large as 40 points in the closing minutes.
Felician junior Dee-End McRae (Newark, N.J./Newark Central) totaled nine points, six rebound and five assists, and freshman Jamling Lama (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) had season highs of 18 minutes and eight points. Senior guard Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) led Caldwell (7-16, 3-12) with 11 points.
Felician closes the regular season by facing Post, which has locked up the North Division title, on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Rutherford. The Golden Falcons' 16 victories match the third-highest total in the 26-year history of their program.
