DOWN GOES THE KNIGHTS!!! Volleyball Knocks Off Undefeated Bridgeport

RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Felician volleyball knocked down the only undefeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team, the University of Bridgeport, Wednesday night and the Golden Falcons battled through five sets to take the 3-2 win over the Purple Knights.

The green-and-gold tallied 61 kills with a .214 attack percentage with Karla Maldonado (Morovis, Puerto Rico) leading the charge with 20 kills and Jelena Vucic (Smederevo, Serbia) behind her with 11. Not only did Vucic tie a career high of 11 kills, but she also posted a career high of seven blocks in the win. Rylee Botelho (Fairhaven, M.A.) recorded 25 assists and Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M.) had 23 digs.

In the previous meeting earlier in the season, the Golden Falcons lost in three sets (0-3) but by at most 5 points throughout match. Tonight, the Golden Falcons dropped in the first 23-25 to then go on and take the second and third, 25-22 both times for the 2-1 advantage over the unconquered. Midway through the fourth, the Purple Knights battled back from a deficit to tie the set at 19, however, the hosts recorded a three point rally on a Maldonado and Sara Betts (Goodyear, A.Z.) kill and a Purple Knights error to sit 22-19 with the match win in reach. Once Bridgeport tied the score again at 23, the score flopped back and forth until the 26th and set point was recorded by the opposer to force a winner take all set.

The final tie of the match was on a Bridgeport kill for their fourth point. Later on, Felician held a 14-6 lead, just one point shy of the impactful conference win, the Purple Knights pushed through for three rally points. Ultimately, Ashanna Caviness (Bogota, N.J.) put an end to the Purple Knights reign with a kill and Felician takes the 3-2 conference win, 15-9.

Tonight's win improved the women's volleyball record to 7-12 overall and 5-2 in the conference. They will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Philadelphia, P.A. to play Chestnut Hill on Sunday, Oct. 15. at 12:00pm.
