Golden Falcons Overcame Griffins for A Five Set Conference Win

PHILADELPHIA, P.A. - Felician Women's Volleyball was crowned the victor of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up with Chestnut Hill on Sunday afternoon through five sets, 3-2. Throughout the 2023 season, the Golden Falcons have reached a five set match four times and currently holds a 4-0 record in that category.

Each match would fall in favor of the opposite winner of each set. Felician dropped in the first, 21-25, took the second, 25-20, then gave the hosts the third, 14-25, and vice versa until the green-and-gold closed out the afternoon strong with a 16-14 fifth set win.

Megan Barker (St. Catharine's, Ontario) was the dominant hand on offense with 13 kills and Karla Maldonado (Morovis, Puerto Rico) had 11. Mariam Kromah (Willingboro, N.J.) became an exciting presence in the front of the net during the match as she posted four blocks, which ties her season/career high. Three defensemen for the Golden Falcons posted double digit digs, Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M.) recorded 20, Maldando had 18, and Kayden Mallette (Maggie Valley, N.C.) had 11.

In the winner takes all set, the Golden Falcons trailed 8-4 with the Griffins almost having a grasp on the conference win. However, Maldando ignited the comeback with a kill while Felician converted a hosts attack error to three more points to have the score sit tied at 9. After Jelena Vucic (Smederevo, Serbia) put the Golden Falcons out in front, 11-10, there was a shift in momentum when Vucic slammed another kill and an assisted block with Sara Betts (Goodyear, A.Z.) to reach Felician's match point, 14-13. The Griffins would drag out the set to extra points, but an attack error and Maldanado's final kill of the match, the Golden Falcons secured their sixth conference win of the season.

The volleyball squad improves to 8-12 overall and 6-3 in the CACC. They will be back on the road to face Bloomfield College in the Bears Den on Tuesday at 7:00pm.
