Women’s Swimming Broke Numerous Records At the ECAC Winter Championship

Rutherford NJ - Felician University Women's Swimming headed to the ECAC Winter Championship this weekend. In what was a 3 day event from December 6th to December 8th, the Golden Falcons held strong throughout the entire weekend as they would earn 6th Place out of the 10 Teams that competed. With numerous records that are officially broken and a lot of times that put Felician at the top of the NE-10 Conference this season, here's how the Golden Falcons performed during each of the days.


Friday - Kicking things off on Friday, the Golden Falcons would participate in 4 total events to start things off, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 500 Yard Freestyle, 50 Yard Freestyle, and the 400 Yard Medley Relay. During these meets, Amelia Mayers took home 3rd Place in the 50 Yard Freestyle while also breaking Felician's record in this meet with a time of 24.05, which was previously held by Natalia Amano with a time of 24.07. Within the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the group of Ummels, Higgs, Omoruyi, and Mayers who finished in 5th have also broken a Felician record with their time of 1:36.62. Just when you thought the records were done, well think again as in the 500 Yard Freestyle Rachel Omoruyi broke the record with a time of 5:10.57. Here's the outcome of each performance from Day 1.

Saturday - After a great kickoff to the ECAC Winter Championship, the Golden Falcons aimed to add onto their records and climb the Ranking Polls. The Golden Falcons would now compete in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, 400 Yard IM, 100 Yard Butterfly, 100 Yard Butterfly, 200 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Breaststroke, 100 yard Backstroke, and the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. At the second event of the day, the 400 Yard IM, Elena Kaufmann broke the Felician Record with a time of 4:42.72. Then right at the end of competition, the group of Amelia Mayers, Rachel Omoruyi, Dedrie Higgs, and Katinka Ummels broke the 800 Freestyle Relay record with a time of 7:44.31 which gave them 3rd Place during that meet. Sunday - On the last day of competition, Felician aimed to finish today strong and that's exactly what they did. While competing in the last 6 events, the 1650 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly and the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the Golden Falcons stayed consistent and made sure they didn't fall in overall team points. Right away, Rachel Omoruyi during the 1650 Yard Freestyle broke the Felician record with a time of 18:02.65 and right behind her, Salma Nuino Galan passed her old record with a time of 18:21.67. Amelia Mayers wasn't done earning medals, as she would take 3rd Place in the 100 Yard Freestyle, breaking another record with a time of 51.89. Then, right at the final meet of the weekend, within the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Dedrie Higgs, Kainka Ummels, Rachel Omoruyi, and Amelia Mayers have broke another record by setting the time of 3:31.35, defeating the previous record by .88 seconds! With numerous records falling from this meet, the Golden Falcons are excited to keep building on their season and continue to add more records this season as they look to see what they can do within their new conference, the NE-10. The times within the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, 500 Yard Freestyle, 50 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Freestyle, and 1650 Yard Freestyle are now all the leading times for the NE-10, the first time Felician has earned any of this recognition. As the team now gets to enjoy and reflect on this historic weekend, they get more than a month to rest up and rejuvenate as then they go up against Saint Peter's University on January 24th.
