PHILADELPHIA – The Felician College men's soccer team mounted consistent offensive pressure in the second half but could not come from behind in a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to host Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field. Holy Family (6-1-1, 4-0-1 CACC) is the No. 9 team in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region ranking.
With the men's game coming first in the day's men-women doubleheader, the Golden Falcons looked to set a positive tone for their ladies to follow. But it was Holy Family who went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, receiving an unassisted tally from senior Marc Fischer (Fairless Hills, PA) in the 41st minute.
After a quick chance by the Tigers missed high to start the second period, Felician (4-5, 1-3) got off the match's next eight shots over a period of 25 minutes. The Golden Falcons could not penetrate HFU keeper Mark Ferretti (Voorhees, NJ) (seven saves), and Fischer would eventually strike again, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead at 74:16.
Felician made things interesting when it was awarded a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, which graduate student Adrian Sutcliffe (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) converted. The Golden Falcons missed the frame on two shots in the remaining time before CACC second-leading scorer Seydou Ba (Philadelphia, PA) got free on a breakaway and scored for HFU with 35 seconds to play.
Felician owned a shot advantage of 18-10, including 12-7 in the second half. Sutcliffe and midfielder Kevin Sinic (Leibnitz, Austria) were the most active with six shots apiece. Freshman Rafal Krauze (Randoph, NJ) made three saves for the Golden Falcons.
With the victory, Holy Family moved into first place in the CACC.
