Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College did not allow a goal in the run of play in a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over visiting Philadelphia University on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Senior Mike Azzato (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) and graduate student Adrian Sutcliffe (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England/Prudhoe) each had a goal and an assist for Felician (3-3, 1-1 CACC).
It was the first victory for the Golden Falcons over Philadelphia in four all-time meetings. The all-time series between Felician and the Rams began in 2008 after Philadelphia reclassified from NCAA Division I, and the Golden Falcons had been outscored, 10-2, in the first three meetings.
All of the match's scoring came in the opening period. Sutcliffe got Felician on the scoreboard first, working a give and go with Azzato before finishing at 12:12. A Golden Falcon miscue led the Rams to tie the match, when the hosts were whistled for a handball in the penalty area at 26:32. Philadelphia senior Ryan Purnell (Hamilton, Bermuda/Berkeley Institute) converted a penalty kick for the equalizer. But a long ball from Sutcliffe got past a defender to Azzato in the 36th minute, and the tri-captain was able to send home the eventual game-winner.
The physical contest saw the teams whistled for a combined 43 fouls and eight cautions. Freshman goalkeeper Rafal Krauze (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) earned the victory for Felician with three saves. Sophomore Alex Heston (Des Moines, IA/Theodore Roosevelt) stopped three shots for Philadelphia. The Golden Falcons owned an 18-12 shot advantage, including 12-7 in the decisive first half. Felician nearly extended the lead in the second period, but twice hit the right post.
Sutcliffe, who earlier this week was moved from the defensive unit to striker, led all players in the match with six shots.
