Barnette Scores 32 As Women's Basketball Wins In OT

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College held visiting Goldey-Beacom College scoreless for the first four minutes of overtime en route to a 70-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Senior guard Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ/PCTI) scored a career-high 32 points for Felician (7-6, 4-2 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (9-5, 4-3) forced the extra session on a driving lay-up by junior Devonne Richardson (Baltimore, MD/Milford Mill Academy) with three seconds to play in regulation, knotting things at 59-59. But the Golden Falcons won the overtime jump ball and Barnette quickly nailed a three-point field goal to put her team ahead for good. The Lightning missed their first nine field-goal attempts of overtime, allowing the hosts to build a 66-59 lead with a minute to play, and shot 1 for 12 for the period.

Felician trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and 32-20 at halftime. The Golden Falcons didn't take their first lead of the second half until back-to-back lay-ups by Barnette left them ahead, 59-57, with 1:19 to play. After the teams traded empty possessions, Richardson (16 points, eight rebounds) would tie it.

Barnette shot 10 for 24 from the field and 10 for 14 at the foul line to surpass 20 points for the fifth time in her last six games. Que Lyles (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) added nine points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for Felician. The Lightning received double-doubles from Irene Hudson (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) (20 points, 15 rebounds) and Akilah Sewell (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College HS) (10 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks).

Felican has won three consecutive games for the first time this season. The Golden Falcons, who are ranked seventh nationally in Division II in field-goal percentage defense, held GBC to 28-percent shooting from the floor.
