Mercy Offense Erupts At Expense Of Felician

Box Score

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Mercy College scored on half of its shot attempts in rolling to an 8-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over visiting Felician College on Thursday afternoon at Mavericks Field. Mercy (10-3-2) is ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region coaches poll.

The Mavericks put four goals on the scoreboard, by four different scorers, in the match's first 27 minutes. Felician junior midfielder Azedine Maazouzi (Brussels, Belgium) picked up his first tally of the season at the 34:31 mark, and Mercy took the 4-1 advantage into halftime. The Golden Falcons trailed by three despite leading the half in shots (8-6) and corner kicks (4-0).

Sophomore Alex Jean (Notre Dame de Londres, France) was credited with an assist on the Maazouzi goal, which ended a 304-minute offensive drought for the visitors.

The hosts put the game away by scoring fewer than 14 minutes into period two, then found the back of the net three times in the last 15 minutes for the final margin. Senior Ernest Afful (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Roberto Dashi (Nyack, N.Y.) finished with two goals each for Mercy, and sophomore Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.) picked up three assists. The Mavericks ended up with a 16-13 edge in shots.

Mercy goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) made seven saves in the win. Sophomore Anthony Tsouhnikas (Clifton, N.J.), who started, and junior Daniel Wroblewski (Brick, N.J.) stopped two shots each for the Golden Falcons.

Felician allowed its most goals in a game since a 12-2 loss in the NAIA national tournament in 2001.
