Men's Soccer Knocks Off Regionally-Ranked Philadelphia

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Junior Chris Hall (Newcastle, England/St. Cuthbert's) flicked a corner kick to classmate Rafa Coronel (Mexico City, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson Institute) for the game-winning goal as Felician College defeated visiting Philadelphia University, 2-1, in double overtime in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

Philadelphia (9-6-1, 7-3-1 CACC) entered the night ranked tied for 10th in the NCAA Division II East Region coaches poll and in second place in the CACC.

Early in the second extra session, Felician freshman defender Makesi Lewis (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad/Queen's Royal College) kept his team in the match by clearing a ball off the goal line. Shortly thereafter, the Golden Falcons (3-11-1, 3-7-1) went on the attack and were awarded back-to-back corner kicks.

On the second offering from senior midfielder Azedine Maazouzi (Brussels, Belgium/CERIA), he found the head of Hall in front of the near post. Hall's flick went into the goal mouth and, through traffic, got to Coronel, who tapped in the game-winner at 104:42.

After a defensive-minded opening period, Felician opened the scoring in the 55th minute on the first collegiate goal for freshman striker Cole Leckburg (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown). Philadelphia, however, out-shot the Golden Falcons, 11-5, for the second half, and their pressure paid off in the 75th minute when a short through-ball by Armando Canela (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) freed Ishmaiah Calwrie (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown), who scored from the middle of the pitch.

The Rams had a potential 89th minute goal disallowed for an offside violation. In the first overtime period, Felician senior goalkeeper Daniel Wroblewski (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) reached behind his body to make a save and keep the game even.

Philadelphia finished with a 21-9 advantage in shots, including 5-1 in overtime. Wroblewski earned the victory with nine saves, and Ram junior keeper Neil Kwiatkowski (Schenectady, N.Y./Duanesburg) stopped two shots. The Rams' Jordan Lynch (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite D'Youville) and Dominic Rodriguez (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) tied for game-high honors with five shot attempts. Rodriguez hit the crossbar with a header in the middle of the first half.

Despite the victory, Felician was eliminated from CACC playoff contention by other conference results on Saturday.

Felician seniors Jason Garay (Perth Amboy, N.J./St. Joseph-Metuchen), Maazouzi and Wroblewski were honored in pre-game Senior Night ceremonies.
