Golden Falcons End Scoring Skid, But Settle For Draw

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician College men's soccer team ended a long scoring drought with a dramatic late goal by junior defender Kabari Palmer (Kingston, Jamaica/Calabar), but settled for a 1-1 draw with visiting Chestnut Hill College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

Palmer's goal ended a seven-match scoreless streak for the Golden Falcons dating back to last season. The dry spell lasted 770 minutes.

Felician (0-4-1, 0-2-1 CACC) had trailed by a goal since the 20th minute. But mid-way through the second half, the Golden Falcons generated many serious scoring chances, including having a header cleared off the goal like by a Chestnut Hill defender.

The hosts finally cashed in with just four minutes, 11 seconds, left in regulation. A corner kick by junior midfielder Alex Jean (Notre Dame de Londres, France/Jean Mermoz) sailed over the 18-yard box and just beyond the far post. Palmer was there to receive the pass, and sent a hard, low shot on frame. CHC freshman goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) actually stopped the ball, but the assistant referee determined that it had already crossed the goal line.

As a light rain began to fall during overtime, the Griffins (2-3-1, 1-1-1) appeared to have the better of play in both sessions. CHC owned a 6-4 edge in shots in the final 20 minutes, as well as 4-0 in corner kicks. Chestnut Hill nearly earned the victory late in the first overtime when a long throw-in from Matthew McLeod (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) went into the net, but the referee ruled that no player from either team had touched it on its way in.

The Griffins received an own goal at 19:55 when another long throw by McLeod was headed by a Golden Falcon defender attempting to clear. The ball went up and backward and evaded the outstretched arms of Felician keeper Daniel Wroblewski (Brick, N.J./Brick Township).

Felician out-shot CHC, 20-13, including 14-5 in period two. Jackson and Wroblewski each made six saves in net.
