Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician College men's soccer team scored once in each half, then held off a furious Post University comeback attempt to earn a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the visiting Eagles on Wednesday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The Golden Falcons defeated Post for the first time since 2005.
In his second career start, Felician freshman goalkeeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) made 10 saves, including two in the final seven minutes, to earn the victory. The Golden Falcons survived disadvantages in the match of 23-10 in shots (13-2 in the second half) and 8-1 in corner kicks (7-1 after halftime).
The Golden Falcons (2-10, 2-5 CACC) experienced a quick reversal of fortunes in the latter stages of the first half. In the 36th minute, a shot by Post senior Souleymane Kone (Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire/Martin Luther King) clanged off of the crossbar and back into play. Shortly thereafter, it was Felician on the offensive. Eagle sophomore keeper Jon Hanlon (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) denied an Alex Jean (Notre Dame de Londres, France/Jean Mermoz) offering, but was unable to corral the rebound. Golden Falcon sophomore Corey Telfer (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) was the first man to the ball, and sent it past Hanlon with 8:20 left in the opening period.
With just fewer than 15 minutes gone by in half No. 2, Jean and the Golden Falcons struck again. A corner kick by Jean, Felician's only such attempt of the night, connected with fellow senior Rafa Coronel (Mexico City, Mexico/Thomas Jefferson Institute), who finished to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles (4-6, 3-5) kept up the offensive pressure, and it finally paid off with 7:42 to play in regulation when Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) tallied his sixth goal of the season. And once again, Felician was fortunate down the stretch, as an 88th minute shot by Post's Vinicius Lelis (Waterbury, Conn./Sacred Heart) hit a post. Burns and the Golden Falcon defense held off the Eagles the rest of the way to escape with their first home win of 2014.
Jean has five assists in Felician's last three matches.
