Morris, Scanlon Help Put Felician In Win Column

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Junior guard Eliana Scanlon (New York, N.Y.) scored 22 points and senior forward Ashley Morris (West Orange, N.J.) added 20 as the Felician College women's basketball team defeated Dowling College, 70-57, on Saturday evening on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. The match-up was part of the two-day, four-team Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament, hosted by Dominican (N.Y.) College.

Felician (1-3) received nine points and seven rebounds from senior center Mary Chisholm (West Babylon, N.Y.), while freshman guard Dannelle Gibson (Bronx, N.Y.) totaled nine points and six boards. Graduate student Nicole Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) turned in 21 points and four assists for Dowling (0-2).

The Golden Falcons erased an early 14-6 deficit to emerge from the first half ahead, 25-23. The teams stayed within one possession of each other for the first seven minutes of period two. After the game was tied for the 10th time at 39-39 and 13:53 remaining in regulation, a Chisholm putback gave Felician the lead for good and touched off a 9-0 Golden Falcon run over the next four minutes.

Still trailing by nine at the 7:27 mark, the Golden Lions turned the tables with a 10-2 spurt, capped by a Christine Verrelle (Abington, Pa.) three-point field goal at the 4:35 mark, to come back within a point. But Shyla Osmond (New Haven, Conn.) canned a jumper on Felician's next possession, and a Gibson three-pointer with 2:30 to play put the Golden Falcons back ahead by six. They then went 9 for 10 from the foul line in the final 66 seconds to secure the victory.

Felician attempted 32 free throws (making 23) and held Dowling to only 14 tries at the line (10). Scanlon, who played all but the final 17 seconds of the contest, was 10 for 12 at the charity stripe and also had five rebounds and a game-high five assists. The Golden Falcons committed a season-low nine turnovers.

Verrelle finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Felician concludes its stay in the Regina Rivera Memorial by taking on Molloy College on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Orangeburg.
