Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – American International College scored a pair of early second-half goals en route to a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over visiting Felician College on an unseasonably warm Thursday night at Abdow Field. The match was the season opener for both schools, and occurred on the first allowable day of 2014-15 competition for NCAA Division II.
American International out-shot Felician, 8-7, in a scoreless first half, but the teams put just one of the 15 attempts on frame. The hosts had the better of play early in period two, and cashed in with 12 minutes, 19 seconds, gone by in the half. Junior Alex Cerquiera (Peabody, Mass.) made a run down the right flank, accepted a pass from teammate Kyle Kazukynas (Enfield, Conn.) and finished in the upper near corner.
Four minutes, five seconds, later, the Yellow Jackets struck again on Greg Smedberg's (Southington, Conn.) shot from the middle of the box into the upper right of the net. The Golden Falcons could only manage two shot attempts in the game's final 28 minutes, both missing high.
Felician forced AIC freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Tamayo (Stratford, Conn.) to make just one save in earning the shutout. It came slightly before the Yellow Jackets' first score, on an attempt by Golden Falcon sophomore midfielder Hector Ramirez (Passaic, N.J.) in the 51st minute. Ramirez was one of four Felician attackers with two shots, while Yellow Jacket midfielder Kevin Milla (Lyndhurst, N.J.) led all players with four.
AIC finished with an 18-11 shot advantage for the night. Felician senior keeper Anthony Tsouhnikas (Clifton, N.J.) had three saves.
