Felician Unable To Play Catch-Up In 6-3 Men's Soccer Loss

Box Score

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Felician College trailed, 4-0, after 70 minutes of an eventual 6-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer loss to host Concordia (N.Y.) College on Tuesday afternoon at Holtdorf Field.

Freshman Kenny Monfort (Spring Valley, N.Y.) picked up his ninth goal of the season and graduate student Rafa Coronel (Mexico City, Mexico) scored twice for Felician (2-13, 1-10 CACC). Sophomore Junior Bernardez (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to register two goals and an assist for Concordia.

The Clippers (7-5-1, 5-5-1) gained the lead 10 minutes, 30 seconds into the contest when Nabeel Qawasmi (Yonkers, N.Y.) knocked home a rebound after Felician sophomore goalkeeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J.) saved a Ricardo Velazquez (Bronx, N.Y.) shot. Velazquez and David McKenzie (Westmoreland, Jamaica) tallied in the 20th and 27th minutes, respectively, to allow the hosts to carry a 3-0 lead into halftime.

The teams combined for 20 first-half shots (Concordia, 13-7) and the free-wheeling offensive style carried on past intermission. Bernardez scored on a Stiv Isaj (Yonkers, N.Y.) corner kick in the 56th minute, setting up a final 19 minutes which saw five goals scored. Felician avoided the shutout when Jorge Pelayo (Clifton, N.J.) intercepted a pass and fed Monfort for a low shot with 18:35 to play.

The Clippers responded 2 ½ minutes later on Bernardez's second of the game, but with 13:26 remaining, Felician was awarded a penalty kick, which Coronel converted for a 5-2 score. Concordia put the game out of reach on a blast from mid-box by Ritsaert Weijers (Netherlands) gave the senior midfielder his first goal of 2015 and 4:21 showing on the clock. Concordia keeper Ruel Gordon (Westmoreland, Jamaica) saved another Coronel penalty kick in the 88th minute, but Coronel got to the rebound and pushed the ball into the net with 2:30 to play to round out the game's scoring.

The Clippers finished the day with edges of 23-18 in shots and 8-6 in corner kicks. Coronel led all players with six shot attempts. Qawasmi completed the afternoon with a goal and two assists.

Gordon earned the victory in net with five saves. Burns stopped eight shots for the Golden Falcons. Both defenses also cleared a ball off the goal line.
