Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Despite 15 kills and a season high-matching four blocks from freshman middle blocker Carmen Shaw (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas), Felician College lost, 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18), to visiting Holy Family University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference interdivisional women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.
Shaw hit a team-high .235 on the day, while also recording three digs, two service aces and one assist. Classmate Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif./Southwest) put down eight kills for Felician (3-14, 1-5 CACC).
The first set featured seven lead changes and was tied on 12 occasions. After the Golden Falcons fought off two set points, Holy Family earned the 27-25 victory on a kill by Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol) and a Felician error.
Felician flipped the script in the second set, recovering from deficits of 9-4 and 15-11 to move ahead, 18-16. The set was tied, 20-20, before a Shaw kill gave the hosts the lead for good. The Tigers committed three errors before recovering for two kills and a block to make it 24-23. Shaw's solo block ended the comeback effort and allowed the Golden Falcons to tie the match at one set apiece.
Set 3 was tightly contested in the early going, with four lead changes and six ties. HFU inched ahead, 15-12, then, following a Felician side-out, the Tigers tallied 10 of the set's final 11 points. Holy Family junior outside hitter Katelyn Scherber (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) helped close out the victory with three consecutive aces down the stretch.
HFU capitalized on the momentum to jump out to a 6-3 Set 4 edge. Later, a Felician service error, two Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) aces, and kills by Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) and Scherber helped the visitors extend a three-point advantage to 19-11. The Golden Falcons saved two match points before a kill by Miller secured the Tiger victory.
Johnson hit .444 with 22 kills and 10 digs to pace the Tigers (3-14, 2-5). Riley turned in 31 digs, four assists and six aces from her libero position, and HFU sophomore setter Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) had 43 assists, 12 digs and two aces.
Senior setter Susie McKeever (North Fort Myers, Fla./North Fort Myers) amassed 30 and eight digs for Felician. Senior Pati Giemza (Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland/SMS Beach Volleyball) picked up 16 digs in three sets off the bench.
Felician starts a stretch of three CACC road matches with a trip to Nyack College on Wednesday night.
