Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Goldey-Beacom College scored three unanswered second-half goals to earn a 4-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over host Felician College on Sunday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician was playing its 2015 home and CACC opener.
Goldey-Beacom (1-3, 1-1 CACC) owned a 26-11 shot advantage. Felician sophomore goalkeeper John Burns (Saddle Brook N.J./Saddle Brook) made a career-high 11 saves.
The match was tied, 1-1, at halftime. GBC junior midfielder Olof Tapper (Linkoping, Sweden/JB Gymnasiet) broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Tapper got free and got off a low shot from close range which Burns saved. Burns was unable to corral the rebound, however, and Tapper was the first player to the loose ball. Tapper pushed another shot past Burns and inside the right post.
Felician generated several chances to come up with the equalizer in the ensuing minutes, most notably by freshman midfielder Jorge Pelayo (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic). Pelayo got off three open shots in a five-minute span, including one that hit a goalpost in the 60th minute. The Lightning then took full control with just less than 20 minutes remaining on a 20-yard blast by sophomore Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain/Arenales).
After GBC had a potential goal called back for an offside violation in the opening minute, Felician (1-2, 0-1) was the first team to dent the scoreboard when Makesi Lewis (Arima, Trinidad/Queen's Royal College) played a longball to freshman Kenny Monfort (Spring Valley, N.Y./St. Joseph-Montvale [N.J.]). Monfort headed the ball over the goalkeeper to himself and finished 4:59 into the match.
The Lightning knotted things fewer than four minutes later off the foot of Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany/Freidrich/Ebert). Despite GBC racking up a 13-4 shot advantage, neither team scored again before the halftime whistle.
Freshman keeper Suhail Bismjilla (Johannesburg, South Africa/Andrews Academy) made two saves for Goldey-Beacom.
