Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. – Freshman Kenny Monfort (Spring Valley, N.Y.) scored twice and classmate Jorge Pelayo (Clifton, N.J.) registered a goal and an assist to lead Felician College to a 3-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over host Queens (N.Y.) College under record-breaking heat on Tuesday afternoon at QC Field.
Felician (1-1) tallied its three goals on only six shot attempts. The Golden Falcons snapped a seven-match losing streak dating back to last season.
Monfort struck for the Golden Falcons just six minutes, 55 seconds into the contest. Freshman Jovan Poggi (Lyndhurst, N.J.) lofted a free kick to the front of the box, and Monfort leapt and was able to push a header into the net. Felician's 1-0 lead held into halftime.
Pelayo's first collegiate goal came on a solid individual effort in the 63rd minute. Pelayo dribbled his way past multiple defenders and put a shot past the right side of the goalkeeper. Both Pelayo and junior Corey Telfer (North Brunswick, N.J.) were credited with assists on Monfort's second goal of the day, giving the Golden Falcons full control with 12:30 to play.
The Knights ruined Felician's clean sheat with 1:05 remaining when a Glen Reid (Falkirk, Scotland) corner kick was successfully headed home by Aitor Gurruchaga (Pamplona, Spain). The Golden Falcons had successfully defended 10 previous Queens corners, including nine in the second half.
Sophomore keeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J.) made three saves for Felician. Queens (0-2) got off 15 shots, led by three from senior Isaiah Kossine (London, England).
