Box Score BEAR, Del. – Freshman midfielder Bashkim Saiti (Teaneck, N.J.) scored his first collegiate goal and senior goalkeeper Jasur Tursunboyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) made a quick-reaction save in the 90th minute as Felician University defeated host Goldey-Beacom College, 1-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Caravel Academy's Bob Peoples Stadium.
Goldey-Beacom (6-2-1, 4-1-1 CACC), which entered the day in first place in the CACC, suffered its first league loss of the season. Felician survived statistical disadvantages of 21-6 in shots and 11-2 in corner kicks.
Felician (2-6-2, 2-3-1) was awarded a 13th minute corner kick, its only such opportunity of the first period. The visitors took full advantage, as the offering by sophomore Jovan Poggi (Lyndhurst, N.J.) connected with the head of Saiti, who finished 12 minutes, 45 seconds into the contest. The teams split 10 shots as the Golden Falcons carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Goldey-Beacom took nine corner kicks in the second half, all successfully defended by the Golden Falcons. The Lightning got off 16 shots in the period, putting four on frame. The biggest threat to Felician's lead, though, came in the final 35 seconds. A high cross was sent near the six-yard box to GBC junior Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland), whose header was blocked by the Felician defense. The rebound went right to Lightning junior Alvaro Martinez (Zaragoza, Spain), who sent another ball toward the goal. Tursunboyev made the catch for the save with his heels just in front of the goal line.
Tursunboyev was credited with five saves in earning his second shutout of the season.
Felician steps out of CACC play to host East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Lyndhurst.
