Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Holy Family University scored twice in the final eight minutes to come away with a 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over host Felician University on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Junior forward Jovan James (Elgin Town, Jamaica) registered both Holy Family goals, tallying the eventual game-winner with seven minutes, 30 seconds, left in regulation time and the clincher with just 2:32 to play.
Scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff time, the match started nearly 75 minutes late due to the double-overtime women's game and the pair of Felician Senior Night ceremonies that preceded it. But Golden Falcon senior goalkeeper Jasur Tursunboyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan/Tashkent International) showed no ill effects from the delay, making a diving save of a Vontae Hilliard (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) shot in the seventh minute. Tursunboyev was forced to make three saves in the first 11 minutes of an otherwise uneventful opening period.
Felician appeared to have the better of play in the early stages of the second half. The hosts generated three corner kick opportunities in the first eight minutes, creating shots on two of them. HFU keeper Mark Pohl (Feasterville, Pa./Abington Friends) made three saves in the first 25 minutes of the second stanza, all off the foot of senior Martin Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate).
The Golden Falcons had two dangerous opportunities whistled back for offside calls. But their best chance came with just under 13 minutes to play, when sophomore midfielder Dean Wright (Dublin, Ireland/Colaiste Choilm) hit the crossbar with a shot from the right side. The ball bounced down in front of the goal and was quickly cleared by Pohl.
Finally, as the game clock wound under nine minutes, HFU senior Connor Stackhouse (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) played a through-ball down the middle of the pitch that freed James. Tursunboyev came out to challenge, but James beat him to his right.
Dan Trodden (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) set up James' second goal of the game and fifth of the season.
Pohl finished the night with four saves in 84 minutes. Tursunboyev also stopped four shots. James topped all players with six shot attempts, while Charlie Macaskill (London, England/Burlington Danes Academy) had five for Felician, which owned a 13-10 edge.
Eight Felician seniors – Emilio Castillo (Garden City, Kan./Garden City), Jessie Cerdas (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park), Kevin Cueva (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley), Makesi Lewis (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago/Queen's Royal College), Tony Leontaris (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren), Corey Telfer (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick), Tursunboyev, and Williams – were honored by Felician president Dr. Anne M. Prisco in a pre-game ceremony.
Felician concludes a five-game homestand with its final home match of the season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Post University in Lyndhurst.
