Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University's furious attempt at a late comeback fell just short as the Golden Falcons were defeated, 3-2, by visiting Wilmington (Del.) University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Wilmington (9-2, 5-1 CACC) is ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region coaches' poll. The Wildcats are also the top scoring team in the CACC, with 2.82 goals per game.
After taking a 2-0 halftime lead, the Wildcats appeared to assume full control with a another goal in the 54th minute. But with 18:40 to play in regulation, Felician broke through. Charlie Macaskill (London, England/Burlington Danes Academy) put a low shot straight on from the top left of the 18-yard box through traffic inside of the left post.
The hosts struck again just 3:26 later. Makesi Lewis (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago/Queen's Royal College) sent a long free kick near the goal line that Martin Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate) centered. Sophomore Kenny Monfort (Spring Valley, N.Y./St. Joseph-Montvale [N.J.]) got to the ball and was able to poke it home to cut the Golden Falcons' deficit to 3-2.
Felician had several chances at the equalizer down the stretch. Wilmington sophomore goalkeeper Vinny Tasca (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) made a pair of back-to-back difficult saves in the 79th minute. Then, in the closing seconds, Felician put together a pair of passes to free Monfort in front of the goal. But his shot from close range was denied by Tasca moments before the closing whistle.
Tasca was credited with six saves. Senior Jasur Tursunboyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan/Tashkent International) stopped three shots in defeat for Felician (3-7-2, 2-4-1).
Felician returns to the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex when it hosts Concordia (N.Y.) College on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
