Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Felician University women's volleyball team lost both ends of its non-conference tri-match hosted by Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Gymnasium. Felician took the first set from Le Moyne College before falling, 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-12, 25-15) in its first match of the day. The Golden Falcons then were defeated, 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-17), by the host Owls.
Felician junior outside hitter Lanyse Castro (Elizabeth, N.J.) recorded three kills and 11 digs against Le Moyne. Castro then tied a school record with eight service aces versus SCSU.
The Golden Falcons began Saturday strong, taking advantage of several Dolphin errors to open up a 10-1 Set 1 lead. Felician was still ahead, 18-10, when Le Moyne rattled off seven consecutive points. The streak ended with a service error, but the Dolphins eventually came all the way back for a 23-23 tie. Out of a Felician timeout, a kill by Paulina Calero (El Centro, Calif.) and a setting error by the Dolphins allowed the Golden Falcons to take the early lead.
But the Felician momentum was short-lived. Le Moyne hit .419 in winning Set 2, then went ahead 13-4 en route to its Set 3 victory. Ahead 2-1, the Dolphins turned a 9-9 tie in the fourth set into a 21-13 edge and went on to clinch the match.
Senior Natalie Casson (Kingman, Ariz.) recorded 15 kills, 12 digs and four aces for Le Moyne (13-4). Sophomore Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y.) hit .429 with 12 kills and three aces in three sets. Calero had eight kills and eight digs and Amanda Coccia (Rahway, N.J.) added 16 digs for Felician.
Later on Saturday, Southern Connecticut State hit .372 and held Felician to 13 kills in a three-set victory. The Owls (13-7) never trailed in either of the final two sets.
In defeat, the Golden Falcons (0-17) came up with a season-high 11 aces. Castro's eight matched the Felician record held by Ashlee DiSalvo (Sept. 29, 2009) and Anni Polscher (Oct. 19, 2012). Calero led the visitors with four kills and nine digs.
Taylor Flowers (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit .769 with 10 kills to lead SCSU.
Southern Connecticut defeated Le Moyne, 3-1, in the day's opening match.
After four consecutive non-league matches, Felician returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play when it hosts Concordia (N.Y.) College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Rutherford.
