Men's Basketball Defense Clamps Down In Overtime For 79-75 Win

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University men's basketball team held the University of the Sciences scoreless over the final three minutes, 40 seconds, of overtime to earn a 79-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the visiting Devils on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.

Felician (8-14, 5-10 CACC) put all five of its starters in double figures in scoring. Senior guard Jamal Reid (Newark, N.J./East Side) (five rebounds, six assists) and sophomore forward Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (8-12 FG, six rebounds) led the way with 19 points apiece. The Devils received game highs of 24 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots from senior guard Sho Da-Silva (Moorestown, N.J./Bishop Eustace).

USciences erased a 20-point second-half deficit, including a seven-point bulge with 1:24 left in regulation. It forced overtime on a Will Gregorits (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) lay-up at the 0:08 mark, following a late Felician turnover, that evened the score at 71-71. After Felician scored on its first possession of extra time, two Gregorits free throws and a transition lay-up by Flo Da-Silva (Moorestown, N.J./Bishop Eustace) handed the Devils their first lead since the game's opening minutes.

But Golden Falcon junior Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J./Medford Tech) converted in the paint to tie the game for the fifth time, 75-75. Following a Devil turnover, Reid found Kozul for a jumper along the left baseline which gave the hosts the lead for good at the 2:06 mark. In the closing minutes, USciences missed on one tying shot and two go-ahead three-point attempts before Felician's Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic) secured the victory by draining two foul shots at the 0:11 mark.

Miavivululu accumulated 16 points with seven rebounds. Chukwuocha scored 11 points and grabbed eight boards, and Golden Falcon junior C.J. Mwila (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson) had 11 points and seven caroms.

Felician went 9 for 14 from three-point range in the opening period, leading by as many as 21 points before setting for a 43-26 halftime advantage. Mwila canned another three on the Golden Falcons' first possession of the second half, but Felician then went cold, allowing the Devils the game's next 16 points in a seven-plus minute stretch. The Golden Falcons were ahead by eight with 3:45 to play in regulation, and still ahead, 69-62, at the 1:24 mark, before letting USciences close with a 9-2 run. The Devils shot 55 percent from the field in the second period before going 1 for 6 in overtime.

Gregorits scored 17 points with six rebounds and four assists. Wes Kerr (Avalon, N.J./Moorestown), who played all 45 minutes, had 14 points, and Flo Da-Silva toaled 12 points and eight rebounds for the visitors.

Felician moved to within two games of the final playoff spot from the CACC North Division with four games left to play.
