Men's Soccer Is Edged By Bloomsburg, 1-0, In 2016 Opener

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Felician University yielded a 69th-minute penalty kick and could not find the back of the net itself in its 1-0 non-conference men's soccer loss to host Bloomsburg University on Thursday night at Steph Pettit Stadium. The matched marked the 2016 season opener for both schools.

Bloomsburg produced the majority of the scoring opportunities in the first half, outshooting Felician by a 10-3 margin. But Golden Falcon junior goalkeeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J.) was up to the task, making seven saves in the period, and the teams went into the intermission scoreless.

The referee set the game's tone early, issuing three cautions in the first 17 minutes and four in the first half. The trend of bookings continued after halftime. Felician went a man up when a Husky was sent off in the 61st minute, but only 66 seconds later, a Golden Falcons player received his second caution of the game, equaling the sides.

The match turned as the game clock neared 21 minutes to play in regulation time. Bloomsburg junior forward Austin Transue (Langhorne, Pa.) was illegally taken down inside of the 18-yard box. The infraction resulted in another red card for Felician and a penalty kick for the Huskies. Transue converted the resulting kick to give the hosts the lead.

Felician was only able to get one shot off thereafter, a Martin Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) offering in the 84th minute that sailed high. The Golden Falcons were whistled for two offside violations in the final two minutes in their frantic attempts to equalize.

Bloomsburg owned a 17-7 shot advantage for the night, with Williams getting off five of the visitors' seven tries. Transue, who hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute, took five shots for the Huskies. Bloomsburg junior goalkeeper Jacob Pesarcik (Whiteall, Pa.) made three saves to pick up the shutout. Burns finished with eight saves.
