Box Score WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven broke a 0-0 tie with a 51st-minute goal and went on to a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over visiting Felician University on Sunday afternoon at Kayo Field.
The teams battled to a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Felician owned a 6-3 shot advantage for the period, and successfully defended five Charger corner kicks.
UNH, however, broke through with 5:14 gone by in the second stanza. Nate Peduzzi's (Old Lyme, Conn.) cross into the 18-yard box found the head of senior Rob Poirer (Old Lyme, Conn.) who finished from in front.
The Chargers kept up the offensive pressure, building up second-half advantages of 12-2 in shots and 3-0 in corner kicks. Their efforts paid off with 6:16 showing on the game clock, when a Cam Twombly (Saco, Maine) goal helped secure the victory for the hosts.
Transfer goalkeeper Jasur Tursunboyev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) made four saves in his Felician debut. UNH freshman Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand) picked up the shutout with two saves.
Felician plays its home opener on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Queens (N.Y.) College at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
