Golden Falcons, Knights Play To 1-1 Draw

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University senior midfielder Martin Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wingate) scored in the 77th minute and the Golden Falcons went on to a 1-1 draw with visiting Queens (N.Y.) College in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician (0-2-1) was playing its 2016 home opener.

In the opening period, Queens (0-0-2) piled up an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks, which they were able to convert into an 8-5 edge in shots. It looked like the Golden Falcons were going to survive the statistical disadvantages until, as the final seconds ticked down, Andras Breuer (Budapest, Hungary/Hunfalvy Janos Bilingual) launched the Knights' eighth corner of the period. He found the foot of senior Brian Belfont (Hempstead, N.Y./Gimnasio Los Mojes), who touched the ball inside of the left goalpost nine seconds before the halftime buzzer.

The second half saw more dangerous goal-scoring opportunities for both teams. Queens goalkeeper Robbie Webster (Perth Australia/Scotch College) stopped a Felician breakaway in the 53rd minute before leaving with an injury. Both defenses also cleared a ball off of the opposition's goal line.

The opportunistic Williams tied the game, and scored the Golden Falcons' first goal of the season, when a long ball played by a Felician midfielder caromed off of Knight keeper James Brostowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). With his back to the goal, Williams volleyed the ball over his head and over Brostowski.

Queens combined to out-shoot Felician, 6-1, in the two overtime periods, but put only one shot on frame. Felician junior keeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) picked up five saves on the day.

The tie was the first for Felician since it played to a 0-0 draw with American International College on Oct. 28, 2013, in Lyndhurst.
