Men's Basketball Outlasts Chestnut Hill In Two OTs

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Felician University erased a six-point deficit in the first overtime period, then outscored Chestnut Hill College, 15-4, in the second extra session to earn a 91-80 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over the host Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena. The game was just the third for Felician in the last six years decided in double-overtime.

Felician senior guard Bryant Webb (Parlin, N.J.) scored all 13 of his points in extra time. He netted the Golden Falcons' first eight points of the first overtime, helping his team rally from a 71-65 hole. Webb was 11 for 12 at the free-throw line in the game's final 10 minutes.

After missing his team's last three games due to injury, Golden Falcon junior guard Gjaimeir Stanford (Wilmington, Del.) returned and matched his season high with 25 points. Stanford scored five points in the second overtime to help the visitors pull away. Sophomore forward Terrell Spaulding (Paterson, N.J.) totaled 24 points in 23 minutes before fouling out late in regulation, and junior guard Damiun Moore (Manchester, N.J.) turned in 14 points, one shy of his career best.

Junior center Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) scored 25 points and junior guard Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 21 for Chestnut Hill (4-16, 1-12 CACC).

Felician (8-13, 5-8) appeared on its way to holding off the Griffins and claiming victory in regulation. Three-point field goals by Stanford and Debon Bright (Woodland Park, N.J.) put the Golden Falcons ahead by seven, their largest spread to that point, with 6:13 to play. Felician still led by five at the 2:33 mark before an Evans three at 2:12 pulled the hosts to within 65-63.

Both offenses then went cold. Empty possessions by the Golden Falcons gave CHC three attempts at tying or go-ahead shots. But when a missed three-pointer went out of bounds to the Golden Falcons at 0:10, the 65-63 score held.

The Griffins, however, got the break they needed when the Felician in-bounder tried but failed to throw the ball off a CHC defender. The ball popped up into the air and into the hands of Isaac, who was fouled going to the basket with just over four ticks remaining. Isaac made two tying foul shots to extend the game.

CHC scored the first six points of overtime, only to see Webb tally the next six. With the game even at 73-73, Evans canned a three at 0:48. But on the ensuing possession, Stanford swung the ball to Jamar Redmond (Roselle, N.J.) who knotted the contest with a trifecta of his own and set up the second extra five-minute session.

After each team split a pair of free throws, senior center Kennedy Chukwuocha (Willingboro, N.J.), who played a game-high 47 minutes, put Felician ahead for good. Chuwuocha then assisted on a Stanford lay-up, touching off an 8-0 run game-clinching run for the visitors. The final 11-point margin was the Golden Falcons' largest of the day.

The game featured 13 ties and 16 lead changes.

Felician is next in action on Wednesday when it hosts Post University at 8 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
