Offense Shut Down In 3-0 Men's Soccer Loss At Post

Box Score

WATERBURY, Conn. – Felician University was limited to only six shots, putting just one on goal, in its 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer loss to host Post University on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

With the victory, Post (6-7, 5-5 CACC) passed Felician by one point in the CACC standings, moving into sixth place. Both teams have two contests remaining. At season's end, the league's top eight teams will move on to the conference tournament. The Golden Falcons (5-8-2, 4-4-2) are two points ahead of eighth-place Nyack College and have a four-point cushion on ninth-place Caldwell University. Caldwell has three games left to play, including an Oct. 25 date with Felician.

All three Eagle goals on Tuesday came in the second period, including two by freshman midfielder Sergio Diaz (Madrid, Spain). The brace gave Diaz nine goals on the season, tying him for fourth place in the CACC.

The first half was relatively uneventful offensively. It took more than eight minutes for either team to attempt a shot, and Post's Nicholas Strecker (Uncasville, Conn.) hit a goalpost. In the 44th minute, Felician defender Steward Salazar (Summit, N.J.) leapt to meet a corner kick, but headed the ball over the frame. In between, midfield play and broken-up passes were prominent.

Diaz flipped the game's momentum in the 56th minute. He lined up for a free kick, and went for the goal. From 35 yards away, he found the back of the net to break the scoreless deadlock.

The Eagle attack was slowed by a pair of offside calls, but just more than nine minutes after Diaz's strike, Post padded its lead. Alvaro Sanchez (Bethel, Conn.) ran onto a ball played ahead by teammate Gabriel Aguilar (Stamford, Conn.) and was left with an open strike, finishing to the lower left of the goal.

Post senior goalkeeper Giovanni Rello (Sao Paolo, Brazil) made his only save of the day off of a Maxi Ojeda (Yonkers, N.Y.) offering in the 75th minute. A minute-plus later, Ojeda returned to have another shot blocked by the Eagle defense. The Golden Falcons came up empty on the ensuing corner kick.

Diaz completed the day's scoring with 13:46 left to play..

The Eagles ran up a 17-6 shot advantage. Diaz led all players with six shots. Felician senior keeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J.) stopped five shots in defeat.

Felician hosts Chestnut Hill College on its Senior Night game on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Lyndhurst, N.J.
