Men's Soccer Unable To Halt No. 17 Wilmington

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. – Wilmington (Del.) University broke open a 3-1 game with five second-half goals to pick up an 8-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over visiting Felician University on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Redshirt sophomore forward Leo Yang (Seoul, South Korea) scored for Felician (1-4, 0-1 CACC). Wilmington is ranked No. 17 in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches' poll and third regionally.

Redshirt junior forward Lorne Bickley (St. Helier, Jersey) tied a Wilmington record by tallying four goals. The Wildcats received a goal and two assists from junior midfielder Shawn Genus (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica).

The Golden Falcons attempted two shots in the game's first minute, one saved and another off the mark. Wilmington (6-0, 1-0 CACC) quickly countered, and a Genus cross freed Bickley for a goal just 2:25 into the action.

After the restart, a similar sequence played out, with Felician creating a flurry of chances but unable to equalize. During the 13th minute, Bickley once again beat the Golden Falcon defense when he headed in a teammate's free kick.

Felician senior Jordi Vim (Barcelona Spain) connected with Yang in the 33rd minute to cut the hosts' lead in half, but the Wildcats restored the two-goal edge with 7:15 left until halftime gone by and carried the 3-1 edge into the break.

Wilmington put the game away by scoring three times in a span of 3:35, the last coming on Bickley's fourth of the contest with 34:02 to play. The Wildcats found the net twice in the last 10 minutes for the final margin.

The Wildcats out-shot Felician, 26-9. Genus led all players with seven attempts, and freshman Diego Duffort (Madrid, Spain) topped the Golden Falcons with three. Felician freshman goalkeeper Alex Ficarra (Phillipsburg, N.J.) made four saves, while Wilmington sophomore Gabriel Prgomet (Melbourne, Australia) grabbed the victory in net with three saves in 71 minutes.

Felician plays its first home game of 2019 when it entertains Caldwell University in CACC action on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
