Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – A successful 66th-minute direct kick by sophomore forward Carlos Alonso (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) lifted Felician University to a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over host Caldwell University on Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field.
Felician (3-5, 2-2 CACC) put the brakes on a 10-game road losing streak dating back to 2019.
The Golden Falcon defense withstood a 17-3 disadvantage in shots. Spearheaded by a back three of graduate student Xabier Aizpuru (Barakaldo, Spain) and sophomores Alvaro Martin Castedo (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) and Michael Vogel (Burgkirchen, Germany), Felician blocked several shots and broke up crossing attempts to prevent Caldwell from becoming especially dangerous. Senior goalkeeper George Hernandez (Paterson, N.J.) backed the effort with five saves.
Martin Castedo nearly put the visitors on the scoreboard during the opening period. He knocked a rebound into the net, but the play was ruled offside. The teams entered the intermission scoreless, and the game remained that way until Alonso lined up for a free kick inches outside the 18-yard box. He buried his strike directly into the goal with 24:01 remaining in regulation time.
Caldwell (3-5, 1-3) put a header on a corner kick that went wide with fewer than five minutes minutes remaining. Hernandez corralled a save with just over two minutes showing on the game clock to preserve the victory.
Felician last won a true road game on Sept. 14, 2019 against Shepherd University, 5-2. The Golden Falcons' previous CACC road win came on Oct. 23, 2018, at Nyack College, 2-1, and their last shutout away from Lyndhurst was back on Oct. 14, 2017, a 2-0 triumph over Holy Family University.
The Golden Falcons travel to Lafayette Hill, Pa., on Sunday to meet Chestnut Hill College in CACC action at 2 p.m.
