Felician Staves Off Devil Comeback For 3-1 Volleyball Victory

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's volleyball team held off a furious comeback by the University of the Sciences to defeat the visiting Devils, 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 28-26), in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician (6-11, 4-3 CACC) has won consecutive matches for the first time this season.

Guided by junior setter Miquela Martinez (Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michael's), the Golden Falcons posted a team attack percentage of .204, a season high. Martinez turned a season-best 41 assists and added 14 digs and two kills.

Felician junior outside hitter Hannah Chiswick (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley) hit .390 and recorded 19 kills, 13 digs and five aces. The hosts received a .348 attack percentage and a season-best 11 kills from junior middle blocker Jelena Vucic (Smederevo, Serbia/Gimnazija Smederevo).

The Golden Falcons claimed six of the final eight first-set rallies to turn a 19-19 tie into a four-point triumph. During Set 2, Chiswick had four services aces during a 6-0 Felician run midway through that helped her team pull away.

After trailing, 11-7, during Set 3, Felician played from behind for much of the set before finally drawing even at 20-20. With the teams deadlocked, 22-22, a kill by Devil senior Bianca Galis (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) put her team ahead to stay, and the visitors were able to extend the match.

The Golden Falcons jumped out to a 14-6 Set 4 edge and appeared poised to end the day when they still led, 19-12. But trailing, 24-20, USciences saved four match points, then took a 25-24 lead. Vucic reknotted the set with a kill, and after the sides traded points, Felician escaped with kills by Vucic and Chiswick, avoiding a deciding set.

Junior Tori Wright (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) totaled 17 kills and 12 digs and senior Natalia Velez (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio Espiritu Santo) added 13 kills and 14 digs for the Devils (3-7, 3-5). USciences committed 14 service errors and surrendered a 10-3 edge in aces.

Junior middle Catherine Lentsch (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn South) accumulated eight kills and three blocks for Felician.

The Golden Falcons step out of conference play on Tuesday, hosting West Chester University at 7 p.m.
