Slow Start Hampers Women's Basketball In Setback At Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Felician University redshirt sophomore swing player Briana Lee (Jersey City, N.J.) recorded 14 points, 15 rebounds and four steals, but the Golden Falcons were defeated by host Mercy College, 84-63, in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Victory Gymnasium.

Felician (0-3) was held to 11 points during the game's first 17 minutes. The Golden Falcons, who never led, fell behind, 13-2 after 4 ½ minutes and 31-6 at the end of the first period.

Mercy (1-2) was led by its starting backcourt combination of junior Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), who had 23 points, seven assists and four steals, and senior Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md.), who totaled 21 points and five steals. The Mavericks received 14 points and 13 rebounds from junior forward Asha Talib (Allentown, Pa.).

Mercy took its largest lead of the night at 43-11 with 3:06 remaining until halftime. The hosts were on top, 49-21, at the break. Felician came as close as 77-63 with 1:35 left in regulation time.

The Golden Falcons committed 31 turnovers, which Mercy converted into 36 points. The Mavericks shot 51 percent from the floor.

Graduate guard Katelyn Andres (North Bergen, N.J.) netted 13 points and junior forward Damia Jordan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 10 points in 10 minutes for the Golden Falcons.

Felician plays its home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. versus St. Thomas Aquinas College in Rutherford, N.J.
